Halloween is just around the corner, and you were probably invited to a costume party, right? Well, I hate spending money on something I will only wear once, especially on something as silly as a Halloween costume. So I use the clothes I already have and buy that one thing that will turn my outfit from cute to costume.

Yeah it’s that easy.

Take a look at the examples below. Turn your furry grey coat and boots into the Big Bad Wolf by adding dog ears. Or turn that cute black ensemble into a witch costume by adding striped stockings or a pointy hat.

Dear Abby and Elle: My sister insisted I buy a pair of red slacks, and all I can think to wear with them is a white blazer. Any ideas for what I should wear beneath the blazer? — Red-hot Legs

Dear Red-hot: What a fun problem! Red pants make a bold statement, and pairing them with a white blazer packs a fashion punch. Since it’s Olympic season, why not add a silky navy or denim blue top and show off your USA pride? Or how about a nautical shirt in navy and white stripes, or a black and white zebra striped shirt?

Maroon is a popular color this year; try pairing a maroon blouse with your red slacks and white blazer for an adventurous fashion-forward look. Bonus: Find a blouse with fun detailing, such as piping, ruffles or bows, for extra flair.

If you prefer a more conservative look, try an oxford or soft cotton shell in pale pink or even white beneath the blazer. But spice up the look with some bright red bling. We insist!
