Rice balls and fall trends

By Elle

With the (oddly) cooler temps this week, I was excited to pull this silky Asian-inspired jacket out of my closet. I’ve long loved Asian design, and most rooms in my house feature some piece of Asian art or a Buddha, some of them gifts from our Japanese exchange students we hosted many, many years ago.

I still remember the day our first student, Kumiko, entered our home. She knew about as much English as I currently know Spanish. In other words, I know a lot of random words but am hard pressed to form a sentence any Spanish-speaking person would understand. Dios mio, it was a rough few weeks! We engaged in a lot of hand gestures and arm waving. And it wasn’t until she knew the English words for vacuum cleaner that she could fully explain how her family saved her grandmother from choking to death on a glutinous rice ball. True story.  (And if you don’t know how that could happen — the choking part, I mean — you’ve never eaten a glutinous rice ball.) Continue reading

Trend alert: Pattern Mixing

Elle favors this warm-weather combo of polka dots and lace.

The change of seasons always offers an opportunity to shake things up, and if you’re like us, you prefer to shake things up in small, low-risk ways, such as trying a new cocktail or swearing off Facebook for a week, because what’s the worst that can happen?  Exactly.  Continue reading

A bit of boho and a twist on tights

Abby & Elle Upstairs Fashion & Design boho chicBy Elle

I accidentally bought this dress the other day at Green Roots Collection at Cleveland Clinic. I was walking past the store and the 50% off sign just happened to catch my eye.  I figured it wouldn’t hurt to look. And try a few things on. But not buy anything, and definitely not two things.

So, what I love about my accidental purchase, made by Plume & Thread, is that it’s waaay soft, made in the USA and is comfortable enough to sleep in. (I have plenty of PJs though, so there’s no need for me to actually sleep in my dress.)

Instead of wearing tights or leggings, I opted for jeans, which really gives the outfit a boho look.

I tried the outfit with two different pairs of boots. I have a clear favorite. Leave me a comment and let me know which you prefer!

Pantone Color of the Year 2017: Greenery

By Abby and Elle
Here on the far east side of Cleveland, we’re shivering, looking at several inches of new snow and yearning to see the green, green grass of spring, or at least a muddy patch or three.

Along comes Pantone to save the day with its hopeful color of the year: greenery!  If you’re shopping for something in greenery and can’t recall the exact shade, just think of the gem peridot or green grapes.  Or we reckon you can always Google it, the solution for all of life’s mysteries.

If you don’t have any greenery in your closet, we recommend doing a sweep of your local thrift stores before hitting the mall or shopping online. After all, what’s greener that recycling/reusing? Enjoy!

Sexy Fashion Trend: Bralette

By Abby

yoins-braletteSo our sex lives can get a little crazy from time to time, and by crazy I mean it disappears. So whether you are experiencing a natural decrease in those helpful reproductive hormones or have kids that just suck the life out of you…sex can be challenging.

We keep our eyes open for things that might give our sex lives a boost. Lucky for us one of this year’s fashion trends happens to be very sexy and practical. The bralette is a bra, lingerie, and a crop top all in one.
